Johann Heinrich Füssli foi um pintor Suíço, mas naturalizou-se em Londres.Estudou a pintura de Reynolds. Em uma longa estadia na Itália aprofundou nos estudos da antiguidade clássica. Foi estudante de teologia para tentar agradar a família. Mas logo se sentiu atraído pelas artes. O cenário de suas obras eram sonhadores e góticos.
As figura feminina foi importante para a obra de Füssli. Foi associado da Royal Academy of arts. Acadêmico completo em 1790 e professor em 1799.Foi apaixonado por Anna Landolt. Mas casou-se com Sophia Rawlins.
Sua pintura mais famosa chama-se o pesadelo " The nightmare". A obra obteve tanto sucesso que o artista fez outras versões posteriores.
Os restos mortais do artista foi enterrado na catedral de Saint paul, em Londres.
Johann Heinrich Füssli was a Swiss painter, but naturalized in London. He studied Reynolds's painting. On a long stay in Italy he deepened his studies of classical antiquity. He was a theology student to try to please his family. But he was soon attracted to the arts. The setting of his works were dreamy and gothic.
The female figure was important for Füssli's work. He was an associate of the Royal Academy of arts. Full Academician in 1790 and Professor in 1799. He was in love with Anna Landolt. But she married Sophia Rawlins.
His most famous painting is called The Nightmare. The work was so successful that the artist made other later versions.
The remains of the artist were buried in the cathedral of Saint Paul in London.
